Carlos Arnaus, Executive Director, Salas Group, Leader in the community, resident and ambassador for Todos Santos
Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Carlos Arnaus, resident of Todos Santos and successful businessman to talk about the Magical Town. He represents one of the most historically important companies in Baja California Sur. Salas Group was founded by Don Guillermo Salas Peyró, a pioneering investor in the Los Cabos and Todos Santos area. They have been participating in projects for the last 40 years, including the development of Cabo Bello, The Marina of Cabo San Lucas and the Cabo Mil radio station, 96.3 FM on the quadrant of Los Cabos.
Q: What makes Todos Santos a Pueblo Magico “Magical Town”?
A: The Magical Town or Pueblo Magico program was created by SECTUR (Mexican Tourism office) to recognize the towns that have kept the cultural and historical wealth of Mexico. Todos Santos, because its population, lifestyle and the preservation of its authenticity, received the name “Magical Town” in 2006.
Q: How did Todos Santos become such a haven for Art Galleries and Artists in Residence?
A: The town’s characteristics and weather has attracted a large number of Mexican and international artists that are retired or in the process of retiring. The bi-cultural atmosphere of this Art Town gives them inspiration to continue their passion for creating art. Their presence in town has led to the opening of 10 Art Galleries with Artists in Residence where people can come and view the art and meet the artist.
Q: What are some of the cultural experiences one might find in Todos Santos?
A: Cultural activities are a part of everyday life in Todos Santos. For example, every week there are Yoga classes on a new platform close to the beach. Writers in town get together every Wednesday at a café and read their poetry or pages of their new books or you can hear the musicians sharing their music with the locals. People come from all over to experience the annual festivals in Todos Santos, such as the International Film Festival of Todos Santos; the Music Festival (organized by Peter Buck, co-founder and lead guitarist of alternative rock band R.E.M); the Art Festival and the Mango Festival.
Q: Tell us a little about the people and the communities of Todos Santos.
A: Todos Santos has a very unique and diverse community. A large part of the population is made up of retired international residents that have chosen the tranquil life of Todos Santos as their new home. Because of its natural and cultural beauty, you can find surfers, musicians, sculptures and artists of all kinds. The community is very supportive of each other and they are always working together to make Todos Santos a better place to live. The American and Canadian residents have created the “La Palapa Society “, which has provided scholarships to over eighty students and created an afterschool program that teaches children English for free.
Q: Tell us about the history of the Hotel California and how it became the subject of the Eagles #1 song – Hotel California.
A: The legend is that one of the members of the Eagles spent time at the Hotel, was inspired by it and wrote the song “Hotel California”. While there are many coincidences between the song and the Hotel, there is no actual proof the two are connected. Our visitors love to believe the story and the hotel has become one of the most visited places in town.
