Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture awarded to the luxury hotel Breidenbacher Hof
Some bars just have a certain force of attraction: they persist through short-lived trends and become a sanctuary for their patrons. These bars have perfected the art of “bar culture” and invite guests to keep coming back. Because the Capella Bar at the Breidenbacher Hof fulfils all of these criteria, it was just presented with the Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture and voted “Bar of the Year 2009”. This award is one of the most coveted in the bar scene.
Insiders have regarded the Capella Bar & Cigar Lounge at the renowned Breidenbacher Hof as one of the most extravagant spots on the famous Königsallee in Düsseldorf. Head of Bar Mirko Gardelliano and his team have proven to be perfect hosts: The staff members from seven different countries give the bar an international flair and strive to make their guests feel welcomed and comfortable. “We are very proud of this award because it shows that we really are one of the best”, states Mirko Gardelliano, whose creativity and excellence as a host have become almost legendary. “Our bar has a very unique atmosphere, everyone can just be himself. A good barkeeper knows what kind of mood a guest is in – and what kind of drink he needs”, he laughs, “we regard our guests as part of the family.”
The menu of the bar offers a total of around 130 cocktails, among them many award-winning signature drinks as well as the team’s very own creations, which have found a fan base not only among locals. As a highlight, Mirko Gardelliano serves an exclusive Avantgarde Cocktail Menu “Open your Senses” – a series of five different cocktails with delicately balanced flavours, accompanied by culinary treats by Chef Michael Reinhardt. The menu creates an explosive taste experience for gourmets. The Cigar Lounge is located directly next to the bar and boasts the largest walk-in Humidor of any hotel in Europe with a selection of 125 cigars. Guests can chose from an extensive collection of Cuban and Dominican masterpieces.
The Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture has been bestowed upon distinguished bars since 2004. Every year ten bars are nominated from a selection of 100 German bars. An impartial jury evaluates the type of bar, its concept, philosophy and most of all its creativity. The nominated bars for 2010 were Beckett’s Kopf, Berlin; Capella Bar & Cigar Lounge, Düsseldorf; Capri Lounge, Köln; Harry’s New York Bar, Frankfurt; Lebensstern, Berlin; Le Lion – Bar de Paris, Hamburg; Modern Masters, Erfurt; Shochu Bar, Berlin; Tobacco, München und Yakshi’s Bar, Hamburg.
