A Time of New Vows

Singapore, 16 January, 2012 – Luxury resort, Capella Singapore, recently announced plans to reward environmentally conscious wedding couples who choose not to include sharks’ fin in their wedding banquet.

In an effort to address growing concerns about the sustainability of seafood in general and sharks specifically, Capella Singapore and Conservation International, are beginning to work together to incorporate sustainable seafood sourcing and address other relevant issues like shark fin soup.   As an initial step, Capella Singapore plans to offer wedding couples an alternative menu that will exclude sharks’ fin soup.

In a bold move to encourage guests to choose sustainable alternative menu items instead of the traditional sharks’ fin soup, Capella Singapore, the destination for society weddings, will be offering one night’s accommodation for two as well as a certificate acknowledging the couple’s contribution in conserving marine life.

“Many couples feel pressured by their parents and in-laws to serve sharks’ fin soup at their weddings, despite being environmentally conscious themselves,” shares Ms Priscilla Chua, Senior Director of Catering and Conference Services.

“At Capella Singapore, we hope to alleviate this familial pressure by offering a further incentive of presenting the certificate to the couple during the dinner, acknowledging the couple’s dedication to marine conservation.”

“Ocean resources and global shark populations in particular, are under enormous pressure from systemic overfishing, which is inherently unsustainable. As a result, sharks are now facing serious threat, which concerns us since they are a critical part of the healthy ocean ecosystems that benefit all of us,” said Dr. Andrew Rosenberg, Chief Scientist for Conservation International and fisheries expert. “We applaud Capella Singapore’s sustainable seafood initiative and look forward to working with their leadership and customers to collaboratively improve ocean conservation.”

The two organizations are also working to raise awareness around the importance of ocean conservation including sharks.

Up to 73 million sharks are killed each year, mostly for their fins. Since the 19th century, some shark populations have declined by as much as 98 percent. Most sharks reach sexual maturity late, have few offspring and reproduce infrequently. Consequently, they simply cannot reproduce quickly enough to recover from fishing pressure. In 2009, the IUCN Shark Specialist Group announced that one-third of the world’s pelagic sharks face extinction.

Capella Singapore wedding packages start at S$1,688++ per table of ten.
