Receive tips and insights from Düsseldorf’s most popular baker.

Josef Hinkel is Düsseldorf’s most celebrated baker, and is known far beyond the city borders for his breads and pastries. Join him at the Carl’s Market, where you will gain an insight into the busy life of a beloved baker.

Founded in 1891 by Jean Hinkel and his wife, Katharina, ‘Hinkel bakery’ has since become a firm favourite in the eyes of Düsseldorf locals. With a rich history, the family-run business served as a food bank during the Second World War in order to feed their hungry neighbors.

Since then, the legacy of Hinkel has been preserved by the family, with the business being passed down through the generations. Josef Hinkel, the great-grandson of the founder and master of the Düsseldorf Bakery Guild, now runs the bakery’s two stores in downtown Düsseldorf. Josef was introduced to the family business from a young age, learning the ropes as a child. Since then, he has become somewhat of a celebrity in his own right and can often be seen waving a cheery hello to all he passes as he cycles to the market with his fresh loaves.

‘The Baker’s Stroll’ offers the opportunity to join Josef for a stroll around the traditional market. Later, Josef will take you on a behind the scenes tour of his renowned bakery, and will even teach you his secret tips for the perfect bread roll! Each day, ‘printen’ (a special kind of gingerbread) is offered in the family bakery, and is still baked according to the original recipe of its original founder, Jean Hinkel.
