Inspired by Shanghai’s history of cultural and commercial exchange, it is the place for all occasions, be it for business luncheons; a celebration or indulgence in homemade pastries in a welcoming ambience. True to the iconic chef’s honest approach towards quality and taste, le Comptoir’s menu is a showcase of simple yet authentic French cuisine, complemented by innovative and bold flavors. Helmed by Mr. Pierre Gagnaire’s protégé, Romain Chapel, le Comptoir will serve breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The extensive wine and beverage list is carefully crafted to enhance diners’ culinary journey in a classic Parisian setting reminiscent of Shanghai’s old-world glamor in the 1930s.
Three-Michelin star chef Pierre Gagnaire celebrated five decades of creativity and success in the kitchen. The atlas of Pierre Gagnaire spans 12 restaurants globally with a total of 17 Michelin stars among them. Driven by his mission statement “facing tomorrow but respectful of yesterday”, the cuisine of Mr. Gagnaire is his means of expression, replacing words with culinary works of art. In the kitchen, he transforms raw ingredients into a symphony of flavors, textures and temperatures delivered with emotion.
Chef Romain Chapel
Romain Chapel’s culinary style is bold and innovative, while keeping true to the fundamental principles of classical French cuisine.
Romain began his career in 2001 with a kitchen internship at Maison Troisgros by three Michelin-starred chef Michel Troisgros in Roanne, France. He enhanced his skills under the tutelage of award-winning chefs, like Philippe Jousse and Jacques Maximin. Romain then returned to his birth town of Mionnay to work in his family’s dining establishment, two Michelin-stars Alain Chapel restaurant, for three years before moving to London in 2012 to helm the celebrated sketch Lecture Room and Library by Pierre Gagnaire.
From 2014, he travelled the world focusing on restaurant openings by Pierre Gagnaire, planning private menus with wine pairings, before choosing Shanghai as his Asian debut with Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li.

Feel right at home in our cozy restaurant, decorated like a French living-room with full-length windows that open up to terraces overlooking the ‘shikumen’ courtyard. le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
The restaurant is elegantly designed with booth seating and classic furniture in rich wood. A French Chinoiserie divider allows privacy by creating a semi-private area from the main dining for up to 20 people.
