The Red Island Unveiled – A National Cocktail like no other

Celebrate National Day with the toast-worthy Red Island Cocktail

Singapore, 25 June 2015 - Joining in the festivities, Bob’s Bar introduces The Red Island cocktail, expertly crafted by Capella Singapore’s talented resident bartender, Vincent Zheng.

The Red Island symbolises how Singapore is both an island and modernised city-state. This exquisite ruby glass of magic, which has also made it through to the finals of the SG50 “A TOAST TO THE NATION”, perfectly encompasses our multifaceted nation. There is certainly no better way to commemorate our nation’s 50th birthday than by downing this amazing concoction.

Unique on its own, the beverage tastes like a cross between Gin Fizz and the classic Singapore Sling. Shiraz, a rare ingredient to be added to a cocktail, is used in place of brandy. However, this special touch sweetens the cocktail and gives it a dry taste commonly experienced when one drinks wine.

The potpourri of ingredients used The Red Island resembles our ethnically diverse nation comprising of four races specifically the Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians.

Inspired by the “bingtanghulu”, a popular Chinese street food, Vincent gave this traditional snack a healthy twist by skewering blueberries coated in brown sugar. This acts as the perfect garnish and appeals to the health conscious who are able to get their sugar fix without adding to the waistline.

An elegant pandan leaf is tied to the side of the wine glass to reflect the Malay Community and olden day Singapore with its lush plantations. Before serving the cocktail, Vincent will lightly torch the pandan leaf, releasing an aromatic note of pandan blossom. He also sprays the rim with pandan tincture.

To depict Singapore’s Indian community, the cocktail is lightly coated with shimmery gold dust.

To resemble our Eurasian community, a red wine glass is used in replacement of the typical cocktail glasses.

Another visually exciting attribute is that upon consumption, the cocktail’s reddish hue infuses up to its upper white foam layer to depict the colour combination of our National flag.

Taste wise, The Red Island hits all the right notes. There is a distinctive citrus flavor and aroma of lemon which emerges with the red wine and emits a tropical fruit note. The aftertaste is robust, with light bitter undertones yet its resulting flavor is subtly sweet. This cocktail is a hot favourite among the ladies and a must-try for any patrons of Bob’s Bar.

The Red Island will be available from August and priced at $26++.
