 Celebrating Women at Capella Singapore

SINGAPORE (7 February 2013) – This March, Capella Singapore is committed to celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March by honouring local women who have carved out a place for themselves in a male-dominated Food & Beverage industry as well as encouraging and benefiting young ladies from a local charity, the YMCA Project Bridge Vocational and Soft Skills Programme.

Joining the culinary team at The Knolls for this notable event will be Janice Wong, owner and chef of the popular 2:AM Dessert Bar, the award-winning Cheese Master and owner of La Fromagerie, Edith Lai-Bompard and Helene Raudaschl, Entrepreneur and Managing Director of gourmet purveyor Indoguna.

The International Women’s Day Menu highlights at Capella Singapore’s Mediterranean restaurant, The Knolls, include a premium seafood Mediterranean salad with extra olive oil as well as a crispy parmesan milk-fed veal cutlet with homemade gnocchi morel sauce by Helen Raudaschl. Edith Lai-Bompard will be bringing the best in homemade black truffle cream cheese as well as the Fourme d’Ambert, her signature homemade marmalade. Dessert will feature the unique and authentic creations of Janice Wong. Wine-lovers can choose the wine-pairing menu which includes a special organic wine pairing from women owned wineries such as Prosecco, Sylvia Franco and Teroldego Rptaliano 2009, Elizabetta Foradoi provided by Alfa wines.  Priced at S$98++ without wine and S$198++ with wine, with 10% of the proceeds going to the YMCA Project Bridge Vocation and Soft Skills Programme, the International Women’s Day Menu is a true celebration of women.

The YMCA Project Bridge Vocational and Soft Skills Programme is a special programme designed for early school leavers and youth-at-risk between the ages of 13 to 19 years old to re-kindle their interest in returning to school or taking up vocational training for future job opportunities.

Beyond giving 10% of the proceeds to the Programme, on 5 March 2013, Capella Singapore will be organising a series of talks conducted by Janice Wong and Helene Raudaschl as well as Alsu Abdulina, Director of Spa at Auriga spa aimed at inspiring and encouraging the girls.  Alsu Abdulina will also be teaching the girls basic grooming and beauty secrets aimed at empowering the girls to be beautiful both inside and out.  The girls will be treated to a delicious gourmet lunch created especially for them by Janice Wong and Capella Singapore’s Executive Chef David Senia.

Championing this project is Eric Guth, Executive Assistant Manager F&B, Capella Singapore, “I feel very passionate about empowering young women to think beyond the constraints of their background and culture.  International Women’s Day is celebrated the world around where husbands, sons, friends and colleagues take time to honour and appreciate the special women in their lives.  This is my way of giving back to society.  I want the girls from the YMCA Project Bridge to be inspired by the stories shared by industry leaders such as Janice, Alsu and Helena to grow and realise that they can carve a profession out of a passion.”

Also championing the project with Capella Singapore is the Resort’s long time business partner, who will be donating 5% of its total profits in March to the charity.

About YMCA Project Bridge:

A Lighthouse for Youths

YMCA Project Bridge is a direct service arm of YMCA of Singapore that reaches out to youths-at-risk and out-of-school youths aged 13 to 19 through meaningful programmes, with an aim to integrate them back into the society. To enrich their lives and help them improve on their social skills, youths at YMCA Project Bridge are given opportunities to serve in YMCA community service programmes locally and overseas, attend adventure and sports camps and participate in enrichment programmes with the involvement of volunteers.

YMCA Project Bridge was initiated in 1999 as a crime prevention pilot project by the Inter-Ministry Youth for Crime on a partnership basis between the YMCA, National Youth Council and Northwest Community Development Council. It was very successful at engaging out-of-school youths in the northern part of Singapore. It provided out-of-school youths with a supportive social environment and exciting activities. From this project, we learnt that resilience in youth and families built desire of out-of-school youths to stay in school. Besides, youths have an on-going need for meaningful and “real” connection with adults in their social world.

To date, we have reached out to 2777 youths/ parents/ peers. In 2012, over 1300 hours in counseling and intervention sessions were conducted by Project Bridge case workers.
