A truly good a cappella group

While most university undergraduates spend their summer holidays at corporate internships or even on holidays, a group of 13 Harvard University undergraduates will be singing their way around the world and – in some countries – raising funds for charity. During their stop in Singapore, the Harvard Din & Tonics will sing in two charity concerts for the Autism Resource Centre and also for a week at Singapore’s most luxurious resort, Capella Singapore.

SINGAPORE, 21 June 2012 – Harvard University’s premier all-male jazz a cappella group, the Din & Tonics, will be spending a week in Singapore as part of their biennial World Tour, which includes Britain, France, Slovenia, Japan, and Australia.

Formed in 1979, the Din & Tonics have shared their unique brand of a cappella with audiences all over the world. With a repertoire centered on the American jazz standards of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, they have performed at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and also played for renowned audiences, which include Andy Garcia in 2007, Sharon Stone and Yo Yo Ma in 2005, as well as performed with Grammy award-winning artist Bobby McFerrin in 2002. The group has also received praise from jazz great, Ella Fitzgerald, who commended them saying, “Not only were you entertaining and witty, but I was very impressed by your vocal skills and musicianship.”

The Din & Tonics will be using their impeccable musicality and humourous antics to raise funds for the Autism Resource Centre (ARC) at two performances held on 4 August 2012 at the School of the Arts Concert Hall. There will also be a special appearance by Pathlight Schoolhouse Jam, a group comprising six Pathlight students at the two performances. Nett ticket proceeds will go to the ARC’s Employability and Employment Centre, an employment service that helps adults with autism gain valuable workplace skills. The evening gala fundraising concert will be graced by Ms Ho Ching, Advisor to the ARC. More details about the charity concert can be found at www.autism.org.sg/dins.

Free public performances will also be held at Capella Singapore from 1 to 5 August 2012.  Please see below for full schedule and venues. In honour of the Din & Tonics, Bob’s Bar at Capella Singapore which features stunning views of the South China Sea has created a very special cocktail, the Din & Tonic, available for purchase at Bob’s Bar during the duration of the a cappella group’s stay.

Huang Kaiyang, a Singaporean Harvard student who is a member of the Din & Tonics, said, “The Dins (as we are affectionately known) are no strangers to Singapore. We were last here in 2010, and we have been sharing our music with Singaporean audiences for over 10 years now. This year we are particularly excited at being able to give back to the Singapore community through the ARC as well as perform at ultra-luxury lifestyle destination, Capella Singapore.”

About Autism Resource Centre (Singapore):
Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) or ARC is a not-for-profit charity based in Singapore and was officially set up in 1999. It was started by professional and parent volunteers dedicated to serving children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to help these individuals lead meaningful and independent lives in society.

ARC offers a wide range of services: Assessment and Diagnosis, Early Intervention, Autism Intervention, Training and Consultancy (AITC), Student Enrichment, Library and Information services.

One of the services recently launched by ARC is the Employability and Employment Centre (E2C) an employment service that is the first of its kind in Singapore for adults with autism.

E2C aims to equip suitable adults with autism with employable skills through training and emplace them in suitable jobs with appropriate job support.  Established with the conviction that with training and support, people with autism can work, clients under the E2C programme are assessed for their strengths and learning needs, then placed in employability training before they are matched with suitable jobs. Once on the job, coaching and support are provided to the client and the employer at the workplace.
